‘SA Current’ cover: RIP Mittens

No cats were harmed in the making of this cover, but many animals are still being harmed (i.e., put to sleep) because San Antonio is still not yet a “no-kill” city. I wanted to put a face on this topic, so I found the cutest, most innocent, wide-eyed kitten I could on shutterstock.com and had a little funeral for him. People asked me — horrified — whether or not Mittens was a real cat who got put down. Well, “Mittens” might not be “real,” but there are tons of cats and dogs like him, and they all need good homes … or else.

I have lived here in San Antonio now for six months and am just appaled at the number of animals being put down, not to mention the ones who are homeless roaming the streets. It truly disgusts me that there are not more spay/neuter programs, and that people will not use them. There is a criminal amount of re-selling of animals on various sites free to the public to post ads. This is a black mark on San Antonio I believe, to think there are such careless people housing animals for profit, and if not making profit, or make a rash decision to take an animal in only for it to “not work out” dumping them in the streets, or abandoning them to a kill shelter. Where is the public outcry? Why is the funding for San Antonio’s animals so low, with the no kill shelters making such ridiculous requirements to house an animal? I am very saddened to hear that today over 80 animals will be put down, TODAY at ACS. This number is absolutely disgusting. Sorry to rant here, but I really couldn’t find many other places to get this saddening fact offf of my chest.
